Geodynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean region
10/13/2016
A scientific Seminar was held on October 13 at the
CNRS-L jointly organized by the CNRS (National Council
for Scientific Research- Lebanon), the LPA (Lebanese
Petroleum Administration), the IFPEN (Institut Français
du Pétrole Energies Nouvelles) and the ESIB- USJ (École
Supérieure des Ingénieurs de Beyrouth), on the theme:
“Geodynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean region:
lithospheric modelling to basin analysis”. It discussed
recent works aiming to better understand the nature
of the crust and its impacts on the geodynamics of
the Levant basin and at a larger scale the Eastern
Mediterranean region. The deep processes that
affect and relate to the shallow sedimentary basin
evolutions were also explored. The outcome of this
seminar highlighted how the scientific community
has and will benefit from the considerable amount
of data that has been provided due to the recent gas
discoveries; including high-resolution seabed mapping,
2D and 3D reflection seismic surveys, gravimetric and
magnetometric campaigns, and even drilling. The
presenters finally tried to link the ongoing research
programs with societal and industrial interests.
